Sporting CP Agree Deal to Appoint Paulo Fonseca as New Manager

Sporting CP have reportedly reached an agreement with Paulo Fonseca to become the club's new head coach, with the Portuguese manager set to leave Olympique Lyonnais and return to his homeland.

According to reports from Portuguese newspaper A BOLA, Sporting have reached an understanding with both Fonseca and Lyon over the proposed move. He is expected to replace Rui Borges, whose departure from the club has already been announced.

The managerial change follows a difficult period for Sporting, with the club's management deciding to make a change in the first-team dugout.

Rui Borges Set to Leave Sporting

Sporting officially confirmed on Sunday, November 1, that discussions had begun with Rui Borges regarding the termination of his contract.

The club also announced that Tiago Fernandes would take temporary charge of the first team while arrangements for a new permanent manager are completed.

Borges leaves after guiding Sporting to the Portuguese league title and Portuguese Cup during the 2024/25 season.

Fonseca Prepares for Sporting Return

Fonseca, who currently manages Lyon, is expected to end his spell in France to take charge of Sporting.

The 53-year-old has previously managed several clubs across Europe, including FC Porto, Braga, Shakhtar Donetsk, Roma, Lille, AC Milan and Lyon.

His experience in different European leagues and competitions makes his expected appointment an important development for Sporting.

Reports indicate that the Portuguese manager could sign a long-term contract, potentially running until 2030, although the final contractual details and official announcement remain outstanding.

A New Chapter for Sporting CP

Fonseca's expected arrival would mark the beginning of a new chapter for Sporting as they look to improve their performances and remain competitive in domestic and European competitions.

Attention will now turn to the completion of his departure from Lyon and Sporting's official announcement.

For Sporting supporters, the prospect of welcoming Fonseca to the dugout brings anticipation as the club prepares for another managerial transition.
