Napoli 3–3 Roma: McTominay Shines, but Late Heartbreak Denies Napoli Victory
Chag Sports
Napoli and Roma delivered a dramatic Serie A encounter on Saturday, with both sides sharing six goals in an entertaining 3–3 draw at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Napoli looked set to claim a crucial victory after taking the lead on three separate occasions, but Roma refused to give up and found a late equaliser to leave the home supporters disappointed.
Anguissa and McTominay Put Napoli in Control
Frank Zambo Anguissa opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a spectacular overhead kick, giving Napoli the advantage before half-time.
Scott McTominay then doubled the lead shortly after the restart, finishing a Matteo Politano cross in the 48th minute.
At 2–0, Napoli appeared to have taken control of the contest. However, Roma had other ideas.
Roma Fight Back
Matias Soulé pulled one back in the 69th minute before Leonardo Balerdi levelled the match five minutes later.
Napoli needed a response, and McTominay delivered again in the 83rd minute, firing home his second goal of the evening to restore the hosts' lead.
But the drama was not over.
In the 89th minute, Balerdi struck for the second time, heading home Wesley's cross to secure a point for Roma and leave Napoli wondering how they had failed to win.
Napoli's Missed Opportunity
For Napoli, the disappointment will come from being unable to protect their advantage. Their attacking quality was clear, but Roma's persistence exposed the importance of defensive concentration until the final whistle.
McTominay's two goals and Anguissa's spectacular opener were major highlights, yet the result ultimately felt like two points dropped for the home side.
Roma, meanwhile, will take confidence from their refusal to surrender, fighting back repeatedly against a Napoli side that had looked capable of securing all three points.
