Cristiano Ronaldo Ends Retirement Speculation With Strong Portugal Commitment
Cristiano Ronaldo has put an end to speculation surrounding his future with the Portugal national team, making it clear that he still wants to compete for his country.
The Portugal captain has now given his own account of what happened during the latest national-team camp, explaining the events that led to his departure and addressing the disagreement surrounding his involvement.
Ronaldo explains what happened
According to Ronaldo, discussions had already taken place about his role within the national team before the latest controversy.
He says Portugal’s coaching staff had communicated that he remained an important part of the project. Ronaldo was also offered the possibility of missing some away matches, but he rejected the idea because he believed his responsibilities as captain required him to remain with the team.
The situation became more complicated around Portugal's match against Norway.
Ronaldo explained that he was asked whether he could play around 30 minutes. He agreed and began warming up during the second half, but was ultimately not brought onto the pitch.
The forward admitted that his reaction after the match was not ideal and apologised for failing to greet the supporters.
A disagreement behind the scenes
Ronaldo says further discussions took place after the match in an attempt to clarify what had happened.
He claims there was an understanding about how the situation would subsequently be explained publicly. However, Ronaldo says the eventual press conference did not reflect that agreement.
For the veteran forward, the issue was therefore bigger than simply playing time.
He described the situation as a matter of trust and said that, throughout his long international career, he had never attempted to interfere with a coach's technical decisions.
“In almost 25 years I have never interfered in a technical decision.”
Ronaldo also accepted responsibility for leaving the camp and apologised to his teammates.
Portugal retirement is not on his mind
Despite everything that happened, Ronaldo's message about his international future is clear.
He says there is no retirement from Portugal at this stage and rejected the idea that his next appearance should simply be treated as a farewell.
For Ronaldo, representing Portugal is still about competition.
He explained that whenever he is fit and available following his suspension, he intends to remain ready to play and help the national team compete for victories.
A career that continues
Ronaldo's relationship with Portugal has been one of the defining stories of his career.
From his early international appearances to becoming the country's captain and one of its most recognisable sporting figures, he has spent decades representing the national team.
His latest statement suggests that he believes there is still more to contribute.
Rather than preparing for a farewell, Ronaldo says his focus remains on being available, competing and helping Portugal win.
