Chelsea Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez Reveals Horrific Finger Injury: “I Cried Every Day”
Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez has opened up about the severe finger injury that caused him immense pain during Argentina's successful 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign in Qatar.
The Argentine international revealed that the injury affected his ability to perform basic goalkeeping movements, forcing him to endure significant discomfort throughout the tournament.
Speaking in an interview, Martínez rated the impact of the injury at 10 out of 10, explaining that he sometimes had to dive using just one arm because of the pain.
“On a scale of 1 to 10, my finger affected me 10/10. Until the day before the Algeria game, I was diving with just one arm, like a zombie,” he revealed.
The goalkeeper also described the emotional impact of the injury, admitting that he cried regularly because of the intense pain and swelling.
“I cried until midnight because my finger was swollen like a sausage,” Martínez said.
He further explained that even putting his injured finger inside his goalkeeper glove was extremely painful, forcing him to ask for the glove to be cut open.
“I screamed in pain every time I put my finger inside my glove. I begged them to cut the glove open,” he added.
The injury also affected his everyday routine, as he revealed that he had to shower with a plastic bag covering his hand while keeping it elevated to manage the discomfort.
Despite these challenges, Martínez continued playing for Argentina and was part of the squad that lifted the 2022 FIFA World Cup trophy in Qatar.
His revelations highlight the physical sacrifices and determination required from footballers competing at the highest level.
